Understanding the Challenges Arborists Face
The use of Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs) in tree work is rapidly growing. At Niftylift, we’re focused on understanding the daily challenges that arborists face—like physically demanding labor, unpredictable weather, difficult terrain, and the high risks that come with working at height.
That insight allows us to recommend the safest and most effective equipment for tree trimming, pruning, and removal.

Industry Guidance on Safe Practices
While ropes and ladders are still widely used, the Arboricultural Association’s revised Industry Code of Practice (ICoP) recommends:
“The use of mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs) such as scissor, boom and vehicle-mounted machines must be considered to prevent falls when working at height.”
This is especially important when working on trees with structural defects, where climbing or rigging may not be safe.

Why Arborists are Turning to MEWPs
MEWPs offer a wide range of benefits for arborists, including:
- Greater productivity and reduced fatigue
- Support for two workers and their tools
- Safer handling of heavy equipment like chainsaws
- Better stability and precision
- A safer and often more economical approach to tree removal

How to Choose the Right MEWP for Tree Work
Tree work can be dangerous—especially near power lines or when the platform isn’t well-positioned. The 2003 Forest Research Report for the HSE (UK) identified three main factors to consider when choosing a MEWP:
1. Site and Tree Conditions
- Working height required
- Distance and angle from the tree
- Ground conditions and any obstacles
2. Machine Performance Criteria
- Weight and maneuverability
- Gradeability and base stability
3. Type of MEWP
- Picking the right model improves efficiency and enhances safety

Why Niftylift’s Self Drive and TrackDrive MEWPs Stand Out
Our Self Drive and TrackDrive MEWP ranges are designed specifically to handle the demands of arboriculture. Key features include:
- Excellent traction for sloped or uneven ground
- Lightweight design that protects turf and delicate surfaces
- Strong, stable platforms
- Safe working load of 440 lbs (up to 500 lbs on SD64 4x4x4 and TD42T)
- Compact size for easy transport and tight access
- Drive-from-platform operation to increase efficiency
- Hydraulic outriggers for fast setup and safe positioning

“The suitability of the ground to take the loads imposed by the MEWP must be evaluated before operation.” – Industry Code of Practice
Comparing Self Drive and TrackDrive MEWPs
Self Drive MEWPs
Ideal for worksites with firm ground and frequent repositioning.
- 4-Wheel Drive system
- Platform heights: 34ft to 64ft
- Driveable from the platform
- Compact and fuel-efficient

Key Models:
- SD50 4x4
- A solid choice for mid-height tree maintenance
- 30% gradeability
- Stable on uneven terrain
- SD64 4x4x4
- A powerful combination of reach and maneuverability
- 45% gradeability
- 64 ft platform height with 42 ft outreach
- Excellent “up and over” reach
“Having articulation in the boom can improve maneuverability of the basket in the crown… this also may save maneuvering time.” – HSE Report
TrackDrive MEWPs
Designed for steep slopes and soft ground where traction is critical.
- Tracked chassis for superior grip
- Platform heights: 34 to 42 ft
- Low weight and compact for easier transport
- Performs well on uneven or fragile surfaces

Key Models:
- TD34T
- Gradeability: 60%
- Paltform height: 34ft | Outreach: 20ft
- TD34TN
- Retractable tracks for tight access (fits through a single doorway)
- Same height and outreach as TD34T
- TD42T
- Gradeability: 45%
- Platform height: 42ft | Outreach: 25ft
“Tracks provide best flotation on softer ground… If the ground is firm, a wheeled base may be more efficient.” – HSE Report
Are tow-behind MEWPs Right for Tree Work?
While towable MEWPs are available from Niftylift, they’re not usually ideal for tree-related jobs. Challenges include:
- Difficult to maneuver manually
- Limited traction on soft or uneven terrain
- Higher risk of ground damage
Our Self Drive and TrackDrive options offer better mobility, less effort, and improved efficiency in real-world conditions.
