Long before sustainability became an industry priority, Niftylift machines were designed around a simple engineering truth: a lighter machine needs less power, uses less energy and does less damage to the site and to the planet. That principle has guided our product design since 1985, and today it extends through everything we do: the machines we build, the way we operate, the people we invest in and the community we belong to.
Our Commitments: The Road to Net Zero
Niftylift is committed to achieving net zero emissions by 2048, reducing our absolute emissions by 90% from our baseline in line with science-based targets and the pathway to limiting global temperature rise to 1.5°C.
In 2024, we measured and reported our full carbon footprint for the first time, across Scopes 1, 2 and 3, giving us the baseline against which all future progress will be measured. To keep us on track, we have set clear near-term targets:
- Reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 60% by 2030
- Procure 100% renewable electricity by 2030
- Reduce Scope 3 emissions by 42% by 2030
- Measure all Scope 3 emissions categories by 2026
Any residual emissions will be neutralised using verified carbon offsets. Progress is driven by our cross-departmental Green Team and independently verified by Positive Planet, whose Certified Standard has awarded Niftylift Bronze certification. Our full Carbon Reduction Plan and live emissions dashboard are publicly available, because commitments only count when they can be checked.
Our Machines: Engineering Out Emissions
The biggest environmental contribution we can make is through the machines themselves, and it starts with weight. Our low-weight, compact designs allow smaller power sources to deliver full performance, reducing energy consumption at every stage of a machine's working life, and cutting transport emissions every time one moves between sites.
On that foundation, we have built the industry's broadest range of clean power options:
- Hydrogen-Electric – the world's first hydrogen-electric MEWPs, producing zero emissions with only water vapour as a by-product.
- All-Electric – zero-emission battery power with industry-leading run times on a single charge.
- Gen2 Hybrid – the technology that won a Queen's Award for Innovation, combining clean electric operation with diesel flexibility, including zero emissions at the point of use.
- Niftylink® – telematics that help fleet owners run machines more efficiently, with real-time insight into health, usage and location.
Where diesel remains the right tool for the job, every engine we fit is EU Stage V and Tier 4 Final compliant without the need for advanced exhaust aftertreatment, and our low-weight design philosophy allows smaller engines to do the same work, reducing carbon emissions by up to 50%.
Our Operations: How We Build
Our environmental commitments apply to our own facilities as much as our products. Niftylift is certified to ISO 14001, the internationally recognised standard for environmental management, and our Shenley Wood world headquarters was designed and built to the BREEAM Excellent standard.
Across our sites, the waste hierarchy guides daily practice: we prioritise the reuse, recycling and remanufacturing of products and parts and work with reputable specialist partners for the responsible disposal of industrial waste. Lean manufacturing principles run throughout the business, eliminating waste in every form while improving the value our products deliver. Smaller measures add up too, from workplace energy policies to our cycle-to-work scheme.
Our responsibility extends into our supply chain. We work with ISO 9001-accredited vendors, visit key suppliers regularly, audit quality standards, and we expect our partners to make ethical purchasing decisions of their own. Prospective suppliers can find out more through our Supplier Portal.
Our People: How We Work
Sustainability includes the people who make Niftylift what it is. We operate as a single-status organisation built on openness, participation, accountability and teamwork, in the belief that everyone should be treated fairly and equally whatever their role. That culture extends beyond the working day: at our Family Open Days, employees share what they build with the people who matter most, giving guided tours and machine demonstrations for friends and family.

The health and safety of our people is protected through certification to ISO 45001 across all sites, and we invest in long-term skills development at every level: an apprenticeship scheme that has run for more than 20 years, our Production Training Centre, sponsored university study, the IMechE Monitored Professional Development Scheme, and industry-specific training including the IPAF PAL card.
Our Community: Where We Belong
Niftylift has been part of the Milton Keynes community for nearly four decades and an active supporter since the early 1990s. We have been members of the MK Community Foundation since 1998 and patron members since 2005, helping local charities that create opportunities for disadvantaged children and vulnerable young people. Our teams fundraise throughout the year, and we contribute goods, services and engineering expertise in kind wherever we can.
Inspiring the next generation of engineers is where we believe we can make the biggest difference. Through Nifty 4 Schools, the RC Nifty Challenge, school work experience placements, sponsored awards at local schools and colleges, and undergraduate and graduate programmes with partner universities, we help young people discover the careers that UK manufacturing offers. Visitors to Milton Keynes Museum can even operate a fully interactive Niftylift machine for themselves.
