Senior Controls System Engineer - Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire


  • Provide control system engineering expertise and technical leadership to support new product development
  • Provide innovative thinking for new projects

Main Tasks:

  • Be responsible for the specification of control systems based on machine level specifications and stakeholders' requirements;
  • Manage stakeholders' requirements to ensure a cost effective, reliable and safe design;
  • Research into new technologies and how they could be incorporated into the control system design;
  • Be responsible for the design of control systems from initial concept through to series production;
  • Oversee and advise on the development of control systems from initial concept through to fully implemented, tested and proven production solutions (including hardware design and software design);
  • Interface with other areas of the Engineering function to ensure the efficient integration of the control systems into the wider product;
  • Interface with and advise the Product Lifecycle Support team to ensure that through-life machine updates and modifications are carried out in line with the intended design;
  • Oversee a small team of engineers or specialists;
  • Own and be responsible for a specific group of commodities;
  • Plan, estimate, prioritise and manage own work and be able to work on multiple projects simultaneously.

The above is not an exhaustive list of duties and you will be expected to perform different tasks as necessitated by your changing role and the organisations overall business objectives.

Qualifications & Experience:

In addition to a strong engineering background, the ideal candidate will have:

  • A degree in a field relevant to electronics and control (candidates without a degree, or without a degree in a relevant field will be considered if they can demonstrate extensive and relevant industry experience);
  • At least 5 years' experience in a relevant role;
  • Experience in system development for complex electro-mechanical systems;
  • Knowledge of PLC logic and programming (knowledge of programming using CoDeSys would be advantageous but not essential, especially using FBD 'Functional Block Diagram' and ST 'Structured Text' languages);
  • Strong problem solving ability;
  • Excellent communication skills.

In addition to the above, the following is preferable but not essential:

  • Experience in electrical design (CAD) packages;
  • Experience in printed circuit board design;
  • An understanding of hydraulic systems;
  • An appreciation of Engineering standards e.g. BS EN ISO 13849 or BS EN 62061.
