Senior Commodity Manager - Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire

Main Purpose of Job:

A flexile role, to engage the global market place, in the selection of worldwide ethical / stable suppliers who can assist in supporting Niftylift in the growth & development of its products.

The Senior commodity manager is responsible for overseeing both the ongoing maintenance and future development of the Niftylift supplier base at the Milton Keynes site. The role is split into two main areas:

  1. Providing leadership on development of the current supplier base and logistics using processes and proven techniques to achieve a world class supply.
  2. To ensure the efficient purchase and control of material at the lowest overall cost, in line with the Niftylift purchasing strategy.


Responsible to: Purchasing Manager.

Liaison with:  Operations, Production, Sales, Design, Engineering, Service, Suppliers, Team Leaders, Logistics Controllers, Quality Assurance.

Main Tasks of Job:

  • Manage an extensive portfolio of suppliers with a spend of £8M including leading in the negotiation of new contracts.
  • Identify areas of opportunity, initiate & implement new purchasing strategies in conjunction with senior colleagues.
  • Contact & asses suitable vendors of all levels for the development of strategic partnerships in line with NL's goals.
  • Develop, maintain & audit an approved primary supplier base on their financial stability, commercial, quality & delivery aspects.
  • Competitively tender all parts as commodity groups.
  • Support New Product Introduction projects through to implementation.
  • Conduct supplier development meetings/projects in line with the Group needs. Involve NL buyer where necessary.
  • Drive & manage company cost down projects across a range of commodities.
  • Develop and maintain ordering methods, rolling delivery schedules, the materials control and purchasing planning parameters on the company's manufacturing software system.
  • Achieve continuous cost down, through strong constructive negotiation, through supplier's technical/engineering resources, global and currency sourcing, correct supplier selection (their skills, resource and facilities), packaging / storage, finish & coatings.

Education / Experience:

Applicants should preferably be a qualified member of the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply. Have a minimum of 2 years in a senior position in commodity management / purchasing.  Demonstrate proven experience and achievement in the following:

  • Purchasing of Composite & Electrical commodities in the Construction or aligned markets.
  • Business administration skills.
  • Purchasing & supply for continuous single piece flow line environment.

Computer literate in Microsoft office and manufacturing software systems (e.g. SAP).

Experience and ability to travel and operate within a global market place.

Conversant with lean manufacturing tools.

Interpersonal skills:

Highly competent and experienced in the negotiation of contracts and conditions. Ability to communicate effectively at all levels, including a high level of presentation skills (verbal & written).Self-motivated and task orientated.

Able to work on own initiative and make decisions based on overall business requirements and best practice.

Ability to work to tight timescales and under pressure whilst maintaining a calm, prioritised and structured approach to all tasks / issues.
